Leadership is 爱

What is leadership? In a word, 爱. 领导 is 爱. If this assertion strikes you as odd at first, perhaps overly simplistic and dismissive of the grit and 生气 normally associated with “true” leadership, I imagine you are not alone. The argument, “Leadership is 爱,” sounds absurd juxtaposed to modern connotations that would have us believe “good” leadership is all about profitable decision-making, 适形的 树立榜样,尽职尽责。

Nowhere 在 mainstream literature 将 you find 爱 as having anything to do with “effective” leadership, except maybe as an emotional afterthought 通过 some who enlist to endeavor toward some collective goal. Modern 爱 connotes carnal passion. It connotes physical 在timacy and sensuality. In our culture, this 爱 is shown as an 在tense feeling than as an essential nature of leadership. Modern 爱 is a weak 爱.

Our society associates 爱 more closely with sex than with leadership. The evidence of this is very clear. This weak notion of 爱 is evident 在 our cinema. It is evident 在 our theater and song. It is evident 在 modern art. It is evident 在 the social sciences and psychology. In this postmodern age, there is no surer sign of 爱 than one’s 将ingness –几乎是社会义务– to have sex. Even 在 our language we say a couple who is having sex is really just “making 爱.”

Aquinas’ definition captures the simplicity and power of 爱 far beyond anything written 在 recent times. The definition goes beyond simple feeling. It raises 爱 over the lower of human acts, passion. It elevates 爱 over the higher acts of the mind, 在tellect. His definition rightly places 爱 as the arbiter between the heart and the mind 通过 identifying it with the human 将. 爱 is an act of the 将.

This is a different 爱 than what we depict 在 society. It is a tough 爱. Once, I described this sort of 爱 to an uncanny group of men. I sat 在 a room of a maximum security federal penitentiary with hardened convicted military criminals. The men were housed 在 U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Volunteering on a ministry team, I was scheduled to present 在 turn on a short topic of my choosing. I chose 爱.

I looked around the room and could tell my unusual start held everyone’s attention. I leaned forward 在 my chair to imitate a whisper, and said, “I 爱 a good 爱 story. Does anyone know any good 爱 stories?”


One 在mate recounted a story about a charming encounter he had with a young member of his family and how the event meant the world to him. This prompted another 在mate to share a similar account 在volving his youngest child. However, once it became clear no one had any further stories to share, I said, “Thank you. Well, it just so happens I brought one of my favorite 爱 stories and I hope no one here minds if I share it. Like all good 爱 stories, it has a bit of a tragic ending, but here goes…”

At this, I stopped, looked around the room and held as many eyes as I could as I repeated Master Sgt. Gordon’s final words with measure and emphasis, “Good luck.” Then I added, “He might as well have said, ‘I 爱 you.’” This was a different kind of 爱 than of what the 在mates were used to hearing.

领导力是追求他人共同利益的意志所赋予的权威和指导, 和其他一样. If 爱 is an act of 将, leadership is an act of 爱. Like 爱, true leadership is a selfless service. The self is removed entirely from the effects. The closer one comes to true leadership, the closer he comes to pure 爱. In the following four sections, we 将 explore a deeper sense of how leadership relates to 爱.


领导 is 爱 because both 爱 and leadership require sacrifices. A sacrifice is the unconditional gift of a good or service rightly belonging to the one who freely gives for the sake of others. 牺牲s cost something of value for the sake of something even more valuable. 爱 is a 牺牲, 因为这是为了他人的利益,而不是为了自己的利益。领导是一种牺牲,因为在其他有形和无形的事情中,花费时间,精力和精力,是为了他人而不是为了自己而追求他人的利益。


Yet, it may be argued that some sacrifices are done for sake of duty. Is it not the Christian’s ultimate duty to 爱? Christ commanded that we must 爱 God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to 爱 our neighbor as ourselves. 牺牲s made for the sake of duty are made for the sake of 爱. If leadership is a sacrifice made of duty, than essentially it is made of 爱. Put simply, leadership is 爱.

Like 爱, there is no ontological opposite of leadership. With the absence of leadership, we find a “whatever goes” mob-like tyranny. Where there is no leadership, there is lawlessness. There is no respect for natural or human law. There is no respect for truth, goodness, or beauty.

Likewise, military commanders understand this principle of “pursuing good for others’ sake, not for the sake of the thing itself” that is 在extricably linked to leadership and 爱. 领导 is 爱 because within God we find pure 爱 and perfect leadership. Jesus is led 通过 the divine 将 of the Father to exercise divine authority and direction to bring about good for all mankind out of 爱. 领导 is 在 fact exercising authority and direction sustained 通过 a 将 for the common good of all. God is 爱, which we defined earlier as 将ing the good of another, 和其他一样. 爱 is the very act of 将ing 在 God, for “God’s 将 is identical with the good 将ed 通过 Him,” according to Aquinas. In the Bread of Life Discourse, Jesus stated, “I came down from heaven not to do my own ,但  of the one who sent me” (Jn 6:38) (emphasis added). For God so 爱d the world, the Evangelist says, that He sent His only begotten son to accomplish His divine 将. During his passion, Jesus prayed to the Father, “Not my 但是你  be done” (Mt 26: 39,42; Mk 14: 36; Lk 22:42) (emphasis added). 领导 is 爱, because the Son does the 将 of the Father out of 爱.
